Large rodents that live in and near freshwater, muskrats are similar in appearance to beavers, though they are typically much smaller. They populate shallow-water areas throughout the United States. Typically muskrats have dark brown fur and grow up to 4 pounds. Generally herbivores, muskrats look for places with abundant aquatic plants like cattails, waterlilies, and duckweed.
